In order to let anyone without any engineering background easily build cool electronic interactive works, Carver Liu, Robi Wang, Hao Xu, and Lei Xu designed the HoneyComb Music Kit. This kit empowers each block with a feature, hiding all technical difficulties. Kids can get rid of screens and return to the construction of physical logical blocks, focusing more on creativity than on electronic principles.
The hexagonal design of the blocks allows for easy expansion, and the original magnetic connection and elastic needle communication make it very easy to use and ensure the stability of the product. Most importantly, a unique one-in-three-out design is adopted on the connection interface to ensure the uniqueness and transmissibility of the signal.
The HoneyComb Music Kit is made of environmentally friendly PVC and ABS, with a non-slip surface. The product's unique wooden classic packaging is made of environmentally-friendly high-density cardboard using laser cutting technology. The packaging dimensions are 265 mm (width) x 140 mm (depth) x 60 mm (height).
Green blocks serve as input modules, blue blocks as logic modules, and orange blocks as output modules. By connecting these blocks and completing basic logical splicing, kids can then connect any conductive object with the alligator clips, turning it into a musical instrument. The possibilities are endless, and children can explore and create their own musical world.
The HoneyComb Music Kit project started in April 2016 in China and was completed in September 2016. It was exhibited at the World Maker Faire New York in October 2016. The designers' research focused on the lack of products that teach kids music in STEAM education without relying on apps. They wanted to bring back the physical logic building and encourage creativity while learning music.
The most challenging aspect of the design was defining the infinite extensibility and compatibility of the interface. To overcome this, the designers implemented a unique (G/D/S/V) 4-wire interface transmission mode. This allowed for compatibility control of analog and digital modules and the use of I2C to achieve compatibility with all complex data modules.
The HoneyComb Music Kit has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2019. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
